Sheppard AFB/Wichita Falls Municipal Airport has been awarded $1 million to help fund construction of a new terminal building.

Transportation and Aviation Director John Burrus said the grant will be used to pay for debt service at the terminal. He said the Federal Aviation Administration has two more years of payments for the project.

US Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao announced Wednesday that three Texas airports or programs received more than $70 million of the $520.5 million in grants awarded nationwide by the US Department of Transportation.
"This $520.5 million in federal support to airports across the country will help keep our nation's airports in good shape and make air travel a better experience for passengers," Chao said.
"The Administration isn't just supporting infrastructure through funding—it's enabling these much-needed improvements to be delivered more quickly. The Department is working hard to streamline the approval process, reduce unnecessary red tape and reduce unnecessary duplicative regulations. t contribute to safety," the DOT said in a written statement today.
The investment in the nation's infrastructure, the DOT said, comes at a time when the United States economy is growing.

"America's airports provide the gateway to the world for our citizens and at the same time provide the first impression of the United States to visitors from abroad," said FAA Administrator Steve Dickson. "It is in our national interest to make them the crown jewel of our transportation system. The Airport Improvement Program allows us to do just that.
