As a general fitness test, an age- and gender-standardized performance score scale is used to assess a soldier's physical fitness.

It will implement a revised ACFT starting April 1, 2022 that will include multiple differences based on 630,000 ACFT test scores, an independent RAND assessment, and soldier feedback. The test now includes standardized performance criteria based on age and gender. Additional changes include the plank as the only core strength measurement and the addition of a 2.5 mile walk as an alternate aerobic event. In addition, an ACFT Management Board will be established to further evaluate the test data and provide a comprehensive analysis with any further proposed changes to the ACFT in April 2023.

The transition to an age- and gender-standardized performance assessment was based on a thorough analysis of all data, soldier feedback, and independent RAND research. Adjusting the rating scales more accurately reflects the distribution of performance across all elements, ensuring a fair transition to the new record-breaking fitness test. The resulting ACFT rating scales are still rigorous and will foster a culture of physical fitness and fitness.

Normative rating scales for age and gender were developed using data from nearly 630,000 ACFT scores, historical APFT performance indicators, and rating scales from other branches of the US military.

The maximum (100 points) was set at the 96th percentile of performance for each age group and event. Likewise, the passing score (60 points) for MDL, SPT, HRP, and SDC is set at the 5th percentile. Ordered additional analytical support from RAND and imposed a six-month delay before recording began to further mitigate remaining risks to our Soldiers. In response, we use the board as the sole exercise to assess hull strength, using accepted US Marine Corps and US Navy standards as a basis and modifying the scales based on requirements.

Moving the board as a single key estimate allows you to verify that the ACFT is consistently and evenly measuring the soldiers' torso strength. It also ensures that Soldiers at each ACFT event have a similar testing experience and opportunity to succeed. Involving the board in a timed, conscious manner ensures that all Soldiers have a chance to become accustomed to the board before ACFT is implemented for crew operations.

The 2.5 mile walk was added as an alternative aerobic endurance exercise to support sites unable to provide equipment or facilities for alternative activities such as walking, cycling or swimming. Additionally, walking is now an option for soldiers whose health care providers see it as a more appropriate alternative aerobic activity due to their physical limitations. Nearly 630,000 ACFT points were entered into the Digital Learning Management System during the study and used by senior executives in deciding whether to fully implement ACFT. These recordings provided sufficient data to evaluate alternative aerobic events and make adjustments. We will continue to monitor the ACFT data and recommend changes as necessary.

Determined that a general fitness test best supports efforts to maintain a fit and operational force, promote a culture of fitness, and ensure equity in the force. As a general fitness test, the age- and gender-normalized performance scale more accurately assesses individual fitness. Age and gender neutral standards do not take into account the physiological differences between people of different ages and genders. Normalization by age and gender allows for a tailored assessment of an individual's overall fitness level. Implementing the ACFT as a common fitness rating also allows all Soldiers to compete fairly for promotions. We will continue to evaluate the ACFT data and recommend changes as needed to ensure they are physically feasible. The change in the general fitness test does not preclude some schools, such as Rangers, Sappers, or Special Forces Assessment and Selection require higher standards of physical fitness.

Physical fitness is an important part of individual and unit training. We must ensure that all soldiers, regardless of MOS, are physically and mentally ready to dedicate, fight, win and come home. The ACFT provides an assessment of all soldiers' muscular strength, muscular endurance, power, speed, agility, coordination, flexibility, balance, reaction time, and aerobic capacity. We have a responsibility to equip our Soldiers with the tools to be successful and maximize their fitness potential.

ACFT implements a new version of ACFT based on data collection from nearly 630,000 tests, independent reviews and soldier feedback. RAND has requested additional analytical support to evaluate the implementation of the current test, which will continue throughout the diagnostic period.

The organization strives to make the ACFT the best measure of soldier physical fitness and has sought analytical assistance from RAND to provide possible additional recommendations based on the new changes.
